SM2 Aerospace systems
The Department trains personnel in the field of designing aerospace systems, automatic and manned spacecraft, upper stages, cruise missiles, and aerospace aircraft.

О кафедре
The SM2 Department was founded in 1960 by an outstanding scientist, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Lenin and state Prizes, General Designer of Rocket and Space Technology, Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, V.N. Chelomey. The department has trained over 3000 engineers, 61 candidates, 8 doctors of Sciences.
The objects of research of the department are manned and unmanned spacecraft, orbital stations, aerospace aircraft, cruise missiles, interplanetary stations, nanosatellites.
For in-depth training, students can choose directions related to the formation of the appearance of aerospace aircraft and other spacecraft, including nano- and picosatellites, as well as research in the field of mechanics of spacecraft structures that have maximum strength and rigidity at low mass: hulls, wings, solar panels.
The courses taught at the department are based on digital technologies for modeling processes occurring in aerospace systems.
In the course of training, students and postgraduates master modern engineering software complexes and, if desired, can gain skills in developing their own application programs.
The scientific school of the department was formed during the participation of its employees in the work on the creation of rocket and space systems «Flight», «Proton», «Soyuz», «Almaz-TKS», ballistic missiles such as «Topol-M» and «Bulava», a large series of unmanned cruise aircraft. The results were implemented at the basic enterprises of the department: JSC «MIC «NPO Mashinostroeniya», JSC «Corporation «MIT», GosNIIAS, a branch of JSC «CENKI» — KB «Motor», PJSC «RSC Energia» and others.
Currently, under the guidance of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A.G. Leonov, the staff is developing interrelated scientific directions, for each of which important practical results have been obtained:
- dynamics, stability and strength of rocket and space technology structures;
- hydroaeroelastic vibrations of aircraft structures;
- parametric and probabilistic analysis of structural dynamics;
- motion dynamics and control systems;
- nonlinear mechanics and parametric oscillations of elastic structures;
- development work.
Students and young teachers of the SM2 department are actively engaged in the creation of nano- and picosatellites of the CubeSat format, which, despite their small size and mass, allow solving serious scientific problems in the field of space weather observation.
At the SM2 department, Industry 4.0 technologies are being actively introduced into the educational process in the application to the design of aerospace systems: students and teachers of the department master virtual reality in the educational space «Cyberphysical Systems of Aerospace Technology», equipped with twenty networked workstations with powerful graphics stations, helmets and VR manipulators. This space was created within the framework of the project «Advanced Engineering Schools».
Since cyberphysics is a combination of the real and virtual world, students create not only virtual models, but also master additive technologies, making dimensional layouts of satellite layouts on a 3D printer.
The SM2 department conducts active scientific work in the field of dynamics and structural strength of aerospace systems. The teachers of the department investigated the operation of the shock absorber system during the landing and the new manned spacecraft «Eagle».
A new scientific direction has been formed at the department related to the analysis of joint fluid movements and the elastic structure of a two-medium aircraft in conditions of intense vortex formation. The problems of flow around structures by a nonstationary incompressible medium flow are solved by the numerical mesh-free Lagrangian method of vortex elements.
Currently, work is actively underway in the field of commercial cosmonautics. In particular, the department is developing a small upper stage «BOT», designed to launch small and ultra-small satellites into working orbits.

Практика и будущая карьера
Within four weeks, they get acquainted with modern technologies and equipment used in the rocket and space industry at the main enterprise of the Military-Industrial Corporation "Scientific and Production Association of Mechanical Engineering". During the internship, students study the work of the main production units of the enterprise: the department of the chief technologist, the department of the chief metallurgist, the shop of procurement operations, the assembly shop, the testing shop.
The second, design and technological, practice after the fourth year is also conducted under the guidance of teachers of the department "Technology of Rocket and Space Engineering". At the leading enterprise of the industry – the Khrunichev State Research and Production Center (Moscow) - in the design bureau, students study in detail the technological processes of manufacturing and assembling components and assemblies of the Proton, Angara and Briz–M launch vehicle structures. Special attention is paid to the processes of machining, assembly and testing used in the production of large diameter frames, fuel tanks, gas storage cylinders, engine frames, fairings.
The process of professional training of future engineers continues after the fifth year, during the third – operational – practice. It begins with a trip to the First State Test Cosmodrome Plesetsk, located in the Arkhangelsk region. From here, the Cyclone, Molniya, Rokot, Kosmos-3M, Soyuz-2, and Topol-M rockets are regularly launched to perform tasks of civil and military significance. The second half of the internship students pass in JSC "MIC "NPO Mashinostroeniya". Under the guidance of experienced specialists, they acquire the skills of designing and testing structural elements of aircraft, participate in the work on thematic plans of divisions.
