The department was founded in 1981 by Academician G.A. Nikolaev.

The department implements two areas of training:

• "Traditional laser technologies";
• "Additive laser technologies".

Scientific directions of the department:

• formation of nanoparticles by laser ablation for renewable sources;
• application of nanofilms by laser particle deposition;
• laser cleaning of materials from dirt and rust;
• hardening of various materials and welds by laser riveting;
• laser shock treatment (LSP);
• tomographic studies and others
