The department was founded by N.E. Zhukovsky in 1878 and conducts general engineering courses «Theoretical Mechanics», «Technical Mechanics», «Theory of Oscillations» for almost all areas of training of graduating departments of Bauman Moscow State Technical University. In 2020, the department received a license to train bachelors in the fundamental direction 01.03.03 «Mechanics and mathematical modeling» in the profile 01.03.03/01 «Mathematical and computer modeling of dynamic systems and processes». Since 2021, the recruitment of bachelors has been carried out. The direction of training involves the extensive use of computer technology in mathematical modeling of dynamic processes of various nature. Students study higher mathematics, classical mechanics and its special sections, optimization and diagnostic methods, learn to create mathematical and computer models of complex dynamical systems. The main areas of practical application of the acquired knowledge: theoretical and applied mechanics, hydrodynamics, applied celestial mechanics. The relevance of the specialization related to mathematical and computer modeling of dynamic systems and processes is due to the wide application of the results of work in this direction in many organizations of science and industry, in management companies of large state and commercial corporations and holdings. Mathematical models, computer algorithms for calculations and analysis are the basis for making optimization and diagnostic decisions in various fields of science, technology, economics and management. At the department there is a postgraduate course in the areas of training 01.02.01 — «Theoretical mechanics» and 01.02.06 — «Dynamics, strength of machines, instruments and equipment».
